WHAT IS BPH?

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
or Enlarged Prostate occurs when the cells of prostate multiply. Prostate gland gets bigger which squeezes the urethra and limits the flow of urine.

- Unclear

Might be coming with age, related to hormonal changes (testosterone)
SYMPTOMS
- Get up at night to urinate > 2 times
- Frequent urination
- Sudden need to urinate
- Have to strain to pass urine
- Weak urine flow
- Post-micturition dribbling
TREATMENTS
Medicines
There are 2 types of medicine available to treat the symptom of BPH
1. Alpha adrenergic blockers: Formerly used as hypertension drugs relax prostate, open channel
(+) Fast acting medicine, feel the improvement within 3 days
(-) Symptoms will recur quickly if patients stop medicine
2. 5-ARI: Help to reduce the production of DHT – a hormone which is necessary for the growth of the prostate
(+) Able to reduce the size of prostate at some levels; Helpful with large prostate cases
(-) Slow-acting medicine
Surgery
- Transurethral resection of the prostate – TURP
- Laser
